Death Penalty For Gays? UK Men Convicted Over Homophobic Literature

After a law making it an offense to incite hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation, three men in Britain have been convicted after distributing literature saying anyone engaging in homosexual activity should be put to death.

The Daily Mail reports:

Ihjaz Ali, Kabir Ahmed and Razwan Javed handed out the pamphlet, called The Death Penalty?, which showed an image of a mannequin hanging from a noose and quoted Islamic texts that said capital punishment was the only way to rid society of homosexuality.

Today at Derby Crown Court, they were convicted by a jury of distributing threatening written material intending to stir up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation in the first prosecution of its kind since legislation came into force in March 2010.

Mehboob Hussain and Umar Javed, who were also charged with the same offence, were found not guilty by the jury.

…During their trial, the jury of seven men and five women heard the men, who are all from Derby, admitted distributing the leaflet, but said they were simply quoting and following what their religion teaches about homosexuality and did not intend to threaten anyone.

The leaflet was handed out outside and near the Jamia Mosque in Derby’s Rosehill Street and in streets around the local neighbourhood in July 2010.

…The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) welcomed the guilty verdicts adding that everyone has a right to be protected against hate crimes.

Sue Hemming, head of the CPS special crime and counter terrorism division, said: ‘A court has heard for the first time from witnesses how they felt, as gay men, when they read a leaflet calling for the death penalty for homosexuals.

…”While people are entitled to hold extreme opinions which others may find unpleasant and obnoxious, they are not entitled to distribute those opinions in a threatening manner intending to stir up hatred against gay people.

This case was not about curtailing people’s religious views or preventing them from educating others about those views; it was that any such views should be expressed in a lawful manner and not incite others to hatred.”

Gay rights group Stonewall welcomed the convictions, which it said ‘vindicates’ its fight against hate crimes.

Christopher Orlando of Staten Island, who was sentenced Tuesday in attack at famed Manhattan gay bar.

A Staten Island teen was sentenced to 60 days in jail Tuesday for his part in pummeling a patron at a legendary West Village gay bar.Christopher Orlando, 18, who also faces five years probation, had pleaded guilty to felony assault as a hate crime and attempted robbery charges for demanding cash in the Oct. 3, 2010, assault on Benjamin Carver at the Stonewall Inn.

The Christopher St. watering hole is known as the birthplace of the gay-rights movement.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Bonnie Wittner granted Orlando, 18, youthful offender status, meaning his record will be sealed if he stays out of trouble.
"He was the minor participant," Orlando's defense lawyer, John Rapawy, said of the comparatively light sentence.
Orlando's pal, Matthew Francis, also of Staten Island, was sent to prison for two years for his role in the attack.

The judge overruled a recommendation by prosecutors that Orlando spend six months behind bars.
The two were busted after the men's room attack on Carver which came after Francis asked the victim about the bar, officials said.

"Get away from me, f-----," Francis yelled when Carver told him it was a gay bar. "I don't like gay people."
Francis then hit Carver, 35, in the face as Orlando held the victim down, prosecutors said.

Teen gets 21 years in prison for killing gay classmate

 

A teenager who fatally shot a gay classmate in the back of the head at an Oxnard middle school was sentenced Monday to 21 years in prison.
A Ventura County judge issued the sentence a
 month after Brandon McInerney agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter in the death of classmate Larry King.

McInerney was shackled during the sentencing and handcuffed as he was led from the courtroom.
McInerney, who was 14 when he pulled a gun out of his backpack and shot King two times at point-blank range, will be kept behind bars until he is 39 under the terms of the deal struck by Ventura County prosecutors.

In an unusual arrangement, the 17-year-old pleaded guilty to the charges after the judge declared a mistrial in his first trial. In return, prosecutors agreed not to go forward with a second trial, which could have resulted in a life sentence.

McInerney's first trial ended in a hung jury in early September, with jurors torn between murder and manslaughter. Some jurors said they believed the district attorney's office was being overly harsh in trying McInerney as an adult and several showed up Monday wearing "Save Brandon" bracelets.

McInerney shot King in a school computer lab at E.O. Green Junior High in Oxnard in February 2008, after days of conflict between the boys. Students and teachers at the trial testified that King had been dressing in women's accessories and wearing makeup, and was flirting aggressively with male students on campus who did not want the attention.

School administrators sent a memo advising teachers to give King his space, but to report safety problems.
Teachers at the trial testified that when they tried to report growing tensions between King and several boys, school leaders shunned them.

OH Teen Videotaped Beating Student Only Gets 90 Days In Juvenile Detention

Levi Sever, the Ohio teen who was videotaped brutally beating another student by his cousin which was then posted to Facebook will serve 90 days in a juvenile detention center for the assault of a gay student that gained national attention after a cell phone video of the attack went viral on the Internet.

Zach Huston, 15, was assaulted on Oct. 17 in a classroom at Unioto High School was targeted and brutally beaten by Sever because he is gay.
Levi Sever, 15, was sentenced yesterday after previously pleading guilty to a delinquency count of assault before Juvenile Court Judge Richard Ward.  Sever was ordered to undergo mental health counseling and continue his education during his detention, said Prosecutor Matthew Schmidt

Only 90 days for tormenting and brutally beating another child on vieotape because he was gay.
Unbelievable and disgusting.  When is this going to end?  Who is going to take a stand against this kind of thing?

Man Sentenced To 30 Years For Murder Of Ugandan Gay Rights Activist David Kato

The murderer of Ugandan gay rights activist David Kato had dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexual, and transgender persons and was beaten to death in his home earlier this year has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Sidney Nsubuga Enoch22, committed the crime after Kato (pictured above) stating that Kato repeatedly made sexual advances him, according to the prosecution evidence. The body of the deceased was discovered in a house by one Kizza Akram, who had earlier left the duo together.
The hunt for Nsubuga culminated in his arrest when he was spotted by residents in Mukono district, who alerted the police. He was arrested after which he admitted to the murder charges brought against him.

For those of you who don;t remember.  Kato was murdered shortly after anti-gay lunatic Scott Lively and Exodus International went to Uganda to stoke the flames of homophobia and gay hatred and who many think that their harmful anti-gay rhetoric is directly responsible for this crime
